Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their third game of the season in the second match of the Indian Premier League 2026 on Sunday. Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar both scored explosive half-centuries, and the team’s bowling was also very good.

It was the Mumbai Indians’ third loss in a row after winning their first game. After beating the Kolkata Knight Riders, they had already lost to the Delhi Capitals and the Rajasthan Royals. Royal Challengers Bengaluru moved up to third place with this win.

RCB sets a huge goal

RCB batted first and set a big goal of 241 runs for the Mumbai Indians. MI got off to a fast start with Ryan Rickelton in charge. Rohit Sharma was just starting to pick up speed when he had to leave the game in the last over of the powerplay because of a muscle strain. MI had already scored 57 runs when Rohit left the field.

After that, MI’s scoring rate dropped. Suyash Sharma changed the game with a great over, getting rid of both Rickelton and Tilak Varma and putting Mumbai on the defensive.

Middle overs change the flow of the game

Suryakumar Yadav and captain Hardik Pandya were starting to work together, but Krunal Pandya ended that by getting rid of Suryakumar. Not long after that, Hardik tried to hit a big shot off Jacob Duffy but got caught.

At that point, MI was 145/4, and it was still unclear if Rohit would come back to the crease. It seemed like a very hard job for them to get 94 runs in the last five overs.

Rutherford fights, but MI doesn’t win

Salt and Kohli dominate RCB innings

Patidar came in and started attacking right away, while Kohli held things together from the other end.

At one point, Patidar had hit 44 runs off just 11 balls and needed a six off the next ball to set the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history, but he couldn’t do much against a well-placed yorker.

Patidar still got to his half-century in just 17 balls, which is the second-fastest fifty for RCB in IPL history.

Sherfane Rutherford kept fighting and got his half-century on the first ball of the 20th over. However, MI needed 39 runs from the last five balls, which was almost impossible.

RCB had already scored 194 runs in 16 overs, which set them up for a big total.
